Table ranking prep races by their effectiveness in preparing horses for the Kentucky Derby.

KDTOP4 prep race ranking

Which Final Prep Races Best Prepared Horses for the Kentucky Derby

Not all prep races test horses the same way. Some are clean and controlled. Others force horses to handle pressure, earn position, and finish under resistance, which are the same conditions the Kentucky Derby creates. KDTop4 ranks each final prep based on how well it prepared horses for that reality, identifying which races gave contenders the strongest foundation heading into May 2nd.

A strong prep race doesn’t just produce a winner—it builds a foundation, preparing young three-year-olds for the pressure, positioning, and finishing demands they’ll face in the Kentucky Derby.

What We Look For in a Prep

  •  Work to obtain early position
  • Face race pressure
  • Finish under resistance
  • Not regress during the stretch run

Lousiana Derby 8.7

Early Position:
Fast early pace forced horses to work to secure position rather than settle into comfortable trips.

Race Pressure:
Sustained pressure throughout the race with multiple contenders in range entering the stretch.

Finishing Under Resistance:
Extended stretch duel required horses to finish while being actively challenged, not just pass tiring runners.

Horses Benefiting Most:
Emerging Market — handled pressure, earned position wide, finished stronger than a live rival

Pavlovian — set and sustained pace, fought through stretch pressure, did not give in late

KDTop4 Read:
This was a complete prep race. Horses exiting this race were tested early, had to earn their position, and proved they could finish under pressure, which mirrors the demands of the Kentucky Derby.

florida Derby 8.6

Early Position:
Honest early pace with multiple horses working to establish position, preventing any runner from securing an uncontested trip.

Race Pressure:
Heavy compression into the stretch with several contenders converging at the same point, forcing difficult positioning decisions.

Finishing Under Resistance:
Multiple horses finishing together under pressure, requiring sustained runs through traffic and wide paths rather than clean, uncontested lanes.

Horses Benefiting Most:
Commandment — closed from off the pace, navigated wide, and finished through a crowded stretch to get up at the wire
The Puma — made a strong move to take the lead, sustained it under pressure, and was only beaten late by a determined closer.  The Puma maintained position in traffic and continued to fight through the stretch while being challenged.

KDTop4 Read:
This was a high-pressure, high-compression prep. Horses exiting this race were forced to deal with traffic, earn their position, and finish while being challenged from multiple directions, which closely replicates the potential chaos and demands of the Kentucky Derby.

Arkansas Derby 7.8

Early Position:
Honest early pace required horses to establish position, though the pressure was not as deep across the field as the top-tier preps.

Race Pressure:
Consistent pressure through the middle of the race, but the field began to separate entering the stretch rather than compress.

Finishing Under Resistance:
The top finishers were required to sustain their runs, though the race became more defined late with less collective stretch resistance.

Horses Benefiting Most:
Renegade – closed from off the pace, made a strong wide move, and finished with authority to separate late
Silent Tactic – tracked mid-pack, moved into contention, and held position under pressure through the stretch

KDTop4 Read:
This was a strong but more structured prep. Horses exiting this race proved they can handle pressure and finish effectively, though they were not tested in the same full-field compression seen in the Florida Derby and Louisiana Derby.

Blue Grass Stakes 6.6

Early Position:
Moderate early pace allowed horses to establish position without being forced into difficult or contested trips.

Race Pressure:
Limited pressure across the field with only a few horses involved, leading to a more controlled race shape.

Finishing Under Resistance:
The winner was able to take control and separate, with others passing tiring horses rather than finishing through sustained challenge.

Horses Benefiting Most:
Further Ado – secured a clean outside stalking trip, moved into position at the right time, and finished with clear separation

KDTop4 Read:
This was a controlled prep race. Further Ado proved capable of taking advantage of a clean trip and finishing effectively, but the race lacked the pressure and stretch resistance typically seen in Derby-like conditions.

Santa Anita Derby 6.6

Early Position:
Moderate early pace with two primary speed horses controlling the race, allowing others to settle into position without heavy pressure.

Race Pressure:
Pressure was concentrated among the top contenders, with limited involvement from the rest of the field.

Finishing Under Resistance:
A defined stretch duel between the top two finishers required both to sustain their efforts, while the remainder of the field faded without impact.

Horses Benefiting Most:
So Happy – tracked the pace, engaged the leader turning for home, and finished strongly to pull clear late
Potente – set and battled through the pace, held position under pressure, and stayed competitive through the stretch

KDTop4 Read:
This was a focused, two-horse prep. The top finishers proved they can handle pressure and sustain a stretch battle, but the race lacked the depth and full-field stress typically seen in Derby-like conditions.
